Remembering: El Zurqui
Another one of my bronze “Mountain Woman” sculptures, this is my “portrait” of El Zurquí (pronounced soor-KEE), a mountain in Costa Rica named after a tragic, Indian hero myth of lost love, wherein the hero is turned into a mountain and a princess is turned into butterflies. Its steep, cloud-forested, slopes were deeply chasmed and almost always hidden by mists. The sculpture strongly suggests the forms and colors of the actual mountain; and the pose reflects the tragedy of the myth. It has reminded some of a Martha Graham dance performance.
