Unity (The Jacobs’ Fish/Bird)

My friend, the documentary filmmaker, Hal Jacobs, had seen a stone carving in a Zen garden in Japan that had a shape somewhat similar to this piece.  He was also fond of my bronze sculpture, “Of Water and Air” (a fish on one side and a bird on the other), and wondered if I could combine the simplicity of the Zen form with the complexity of my bronze.  I reveled in the challenge of simplifying and fitting the fish’s and bird’s bodies within the compact design of the stone.  The sculpture was an anniversary gift to his wife, Alicia.
