After the eruption (IRAzu)
This bronze sculpture was inspired by a visit to the Irazú Volcano, outside San Jose, Costa Rica. It was one of my first “Mountain Woman”—a draped, female figure in the pose of a mountain—and I sculpted it while living in Costa Rica.
Looking down into the huge caldera, I was awed by the stillness that held the evidence of a magnificently powerful event that had blown off the top of a mountain. The patterns in the sculpted draping closely echo the fractured ridges of earth, and the woman’s lap is shaped much like the caldera of the volcano. For me it has a satisfying balance between realism & abstraction.
