Braving the COld

This is the first bronze I ever cast.  It was during a bronze foundry course I took in the mid 80’s.  It was a one-of-a-kind till recently, when one of my students saw it and asked if I would cast one for him, so now in 2018, I am offering it as a limited edition.

I was inspired, one blustery, winter day, seeing an old man walking with a limp to the Natural History Museum on Gilbert Ave. in Cincinnati with two little kids.  I was struck by his resoluteness in the face of his age, his handicap, & the bad weather to get to the museum for the children’s sake and for his own.

I worked directly in wax, and the rough, weathered, surface textures that resulted seem to enhance the mood and meaning of the piece, as do the zigzagging angles of his limbs, which also portray the energetic unsteadiness of the old man. I guess he’s a little Big Man.
