The Volcano Sleeps

(IRAZÚ)

Like my “Mountain Women” sculpture, "After the Eruption", this bronze was inspired by looking into the caldera of the 11,250 foot Irazú Volcano in Costa Rica, which erupted in 1994 and in 1963. There, you can imagine the awesome violence as you stand at the rim, looking at great fractures in the earth, now peaceful, surrounding the deep, steaming crater. It is a beautiful, desolate place. These sculptures are about hidden beauty and hidden danger. And they accurately represent the appearance of Irazú.
