piano rhapsody in 3d
This bronze, piano sculpture is the third variation in my series of sculptures that was inspired by the music of the jazz pianist and composer, Thelonious Monk.
It is what his music “looks” like to me—angular and off-tilt and full of surprises, but always gracefully resolved.
This version has become more about all pianists, swept up in the passion of their playing with the music heaving and swirling all around them.
It is the smallest one of the series; I felt like a gem cutter creating all the many facets and planes of the composition. Believe it or not, I worked on this, off-and-on, for over five years!
As in all three versions I have treated the flat, lid side of the piano as one might an abstract painting, using line and texture to create the illusion of space.
