Jesus, at the Comboni Missionaries
This was largely a cleaning and resealing project, for which I partnered with the expert stone restoration services of AGG Preservation. In addition to helping with the cleaning and sealing, my main role was to re-sculpt Christ’s broken and missing fingertips and his nose. I worked directly on the marble sculpture using resin mixed with marble dust. I slightly overbuilt the parts, then carved and filed them down to their correct shapes.
The pictures show before and after results. The sugary texture of the aged marble cannot be corrected at this stage of deterioration as too much detail would have to be carved away to get to smooth stone. But we were able to seal it to try and prevent further deterioration.
